Why Hobble Skirts and High Heels?

"The Little Black Hobble Skirt" has arrived at RoSa Shoes! We're known for our Stiletto collections, so you may be asking why Hobble Skirts?

The simple answer is that nothing else looks as good with Stiletto-heeled shoes as a Hobble Skirt.

One reason for this is that the curve of the rear outline of a (well-designed) Stiletto shoe echoes the feminine curves of the wearer from the waist down (the "rear" in fact lol), never better shown than when clad in a tight skirt. Here's Yours Truly obligingly demonstrating for you:

A second reason why a Hobble Skirt and a pair of high Stiletto Shoes are inseparable companions aesthetically (and practically) is one of movement. The first thing you do when you put your Hobble Skirt on, before donning your Heels, is to stand, and then walk, on tiptoe to go and fetch them. If you've never worn a Hobble Skirt (i.e. a skirt which restricts movement below the knee) try tying something non-stretchy (rope, ribbon, dog-lead or whatever comes easily to hand) around your knees. How is it easier to walk? Flat-footed or on tippy toes? And, more importantly, what looks better?

And of course it works the other way around. When wearing vertiginous heels, one's stride is shortened. This is a question of mathematics.... or maybe science. Whatever the reason (moving on quickly) it makes perfect sense to slide yourself into your Hobble. You're not going to be leaping about with manly strides in your heels, so why not go the whole way with the look? Your Hobble Skirt magically becomes perfectly manageable when coupled with High Heel Stilettos! And you'll look fantastic!

Of course there will be the occasional hazard. Negotiating hills, for instance, can be fun in a Hobble Skirt and High Heels. Gentle downward slopes can increase the pitch of your foot, already peilously steep inside your shoe, to challenging proportions. Keeping calm and assertive in the face of such adversity is the key - all very character strengthening. And anyway you can remind yourself that the journey back will be so much easier. Going uphill in Heels is a piece of black forest gateau. Unless your'e wearing a Hobble Skirt of course. Which you will be. This takes hard work, determination and quite a bit of puff. Wearing a Hobble Skirt can therefore also be seen as part of your daily fitness routine.

Beehive Hair and Growing Old Disgracefully

After the addition of my sixties-style pics to the RoSa Shoes Gallery last week, I was surprised to see something rather similar to my beehive hairstyle on Jean Paul Gaultier's Paris catwalk models the very next Saturday.

Mind you, I know the great man has to get his ideas from somewhere. In the 1980's, legend has it that he could often be seen wandering about in London's Kensington Market soaking up influences from the up and coming street fashion designers. He may even have encountered our early handmade "Roger and Sarah Adams" shoe designs in Kim West's "Heels of London" shoe department. (Madonna certainly did - she bought a pair). Now it seems he's looking to yours truly for inspiration in styling his ladies. Not that I'm not flattered. Of course I am. And it was only a matter of time.

What's gratifying to see is the homage paid by Gaultier to the beautifully coiffeured, towering hairstyles of the early 1960's. For far too long the word "beehive" has been synonymous with the Amy Winehouse style of "up-do". No disrespect to Amy but, let's face it, hers is more like an abandoned bird's nest. Not at all like those earlier elegant, smoothly sculpted wonders.

The main difference between Jean Paul's models' beehives and mine is that they just had wigs plonked on their heads, whereas mine was lovingly created over a period of an hour or so. Oh, and theirs were grey, and mine ..... isn't. This is because (in their case) Gaultier's theme was that of "growing old gracefully" and (in my case) because ... I don't seem to have grey hair.

By the way, to complete the sixties look in this series of photos, I wore a pair of shoes from the new RoSa range of Ultra-High Stilettos. The Pointed-Toe version of course.

There are also some very cute Round-Toe designs on this (five-inch plus) heel more reminiscent of a slightly earlier era, the 1950's - but these must be the subject of another blog. In the meantime, please excuse me as I have to rush to the shops to buy a few more cans of hairspray.

Passion, Passeggiata and Platform Stilettos

The splendid stiletto heels of our RoSa Shoes are a daily reminder to me of the supremacy of Italian craftsmanship. We knew we could trust the Italians to make our designs come to life with such stunning precision and beauty. Italy is, after all, the birthplace of the stiletto heel.

Having just returned again from a short visit to Italy, I am convinced more than ever that this passion with which Italians approach their shoemaking and in fact all those other creative endeavours for which they're famous the world over - their art, their music, their cars, their food, their wine, their clothes - is really the same passion with which they approach every aspect of their daily lives.

I loved our early evening stroll ("passeggiata" as it's known) down the main shopping street in the old town. The restaurants were not due to start serving until around 8 o'clock but the shops had just re-opened for the evening (after an extended 3-hour lunch break), and I was able to spend a blissful hour window shopping, teetering along on my RoSa 6-inch stiletto-heeled Gladiator Platform Sandals, enjoying the balmy early Autumn Italian evening before heading off to the nearest Ristorante for yet more pasta, pesce and panna cotta. (These photos are stills from the movie "Italian Night in High Stilettos").

And really, this is what I love so much about Italy - one of life's most pleasurable activities (eating, that is...) is given centre-stage in daily life. Who else but the Italians take their meals so seriously, that life comes to a complete standstill in the middle of the day, to allow them to spend time leisurely munching their way through up to four courses of wonderful food?

None of this grabbing yourself a curled-up lunchtime sandwich or some fast-food delicacy, rushing home at 6pm to microwave yourself a quick snack before dashing off to the pub at 7.30.

Not so the Italian way of life. Here, you have time to digest your yummy lunch, recover from the accompanying two (or three, hehe) glasses of vino, and resume your business late in the afternoon. And really all you're doing is biding your time until the next marvellous meal.

A friend once told me he'd spent NINE HOURS eating at an Italian wedding feast. Now, that's SERIOUSLY passionate. Even I couldn't spend nine hours eating. Drinking maybe, but not eating.

High Stiletto Platforms and Pointy Toes

Goodness me - I can't believe I've been so slow in updating my blog. I've never been prolific, I know, but four months? RoSa Shoes, on the other hand, have been far from slow in adding new styles to their collection of Platform and Pointed Stilettos this Summer, all exclusively available from their website.

First, in May, came two new pointed-toe variations on our High Stiletto Heel, a classic Slingback in smooth black leather

and (inspired by an original style from the early 1960's) an Open-Sided Court shoe with Mock Croc trim.

(Actually, they aren't strictly speaking new designs for us - in fact they were both part of our original, lower heeled collection. But even more gorgeous on the High Heel, I think you'll agree).

And August has seen the introduction of the 6-Buckle "Gladiator" High Stiletto Platform Sandal

and the Lace-Up High Stiletto Platform Slingback.

If you were watching the website at the beginning of the month, you may have seen the announcement that these new Platforms were due in the next few days. I must apologise if you were waiting for them to arrive, as they took a little longer to get here from the shoemakers due to Italy's Autostrade truck restrictions in the month of August, but worth waiting for, eh?

And am I now forgiven for my blog-writing tardiness? After all, as one half of the RoSa Shoes design team, I have just given you some of the world's most spectacular shoes. Well, I've given you the pictures, at any rate. If you want a pair for yourself, you know what you must do...

A Stiletto Volcanic "Ashback" Offer too Good to Miss!

Last week, we were supposed to be in the South of Portugal for a few days' break, but thanks to an Icelandic Volcano spewing ash all over the European airspace, we were grounded here in the UK. I was planning to take my RoSa High Stiletto Patform Sandals and we had hoped for some good photo and filming opportunities. Me teetering along some palm tree lined boulevard with the brilliant blues of the sky and ocean as a backdrop. That sort of thing.

But would I let a mere volcano scupper my high-heeled fun? As it happens, we've had our fair share of blue skies this week at home and, although not warm enough to expose too much in the way of flesh, I felt the urge to visit the Seaside right here in Good Old Sussex by the Sea, and pose about a bit. Deciding I could just about cope with unstockinged feet and a little bit of bare leg, I wriggled my toes into the peep-toes of my Sandals, squeezed my bottom into my crop-leg jeans (but not necessarily in that order) and wobbled my way off to the beach.

We're quite pleased with the resulting pics and video - not quite Portugal, but pretty damn close. Apart from the pebbles.

We thought we'd let you share in our good fortune at having our holiday cancelled. RoSa Shoes - Teetering into Twenty Ten

I always enjoy wearing my RoSa Shoes from the "Classic Stiletto" range. Last week I teamed my Buckle Monks with narrow-leg leathery jeans, and felt pretty damn cool -

But my outing was tinged with sadness. We recently received news from Italy that the heel for this range can no longer be made, as the production equipment has become unusable.

Firstly, let me reassure you there is no need for panic about the future! RoSa Shoes itself continues to move forever onwards and upwards. We will be moving several existing designs over to our equally slender and beautiful High Stiletto Heel. We have already introduced a new range of shoes which use a platform sole and an even higher heel, and further exciting new developments are being planned as we speak.

But there will be no more of our lower "Classic Stiletto" shoes or boots after the current stock has been sold. Once they're gone, they're gone.

This is particularly poignant for us, as it was the discovery of this very thin, curvaceous, metal-stemmed 10 cm heel, directly influenced by and made in much the same way as, the slender stiletto heels of the 1960s, which led to the birth of RoSa Shoes. The finding of such an authentic stiletto heel inspired us, in 2006, to create a range of shoes based on the iconic styling of those original stilettos and, together with our extended pointed toe, it helped establish our first RoSa designs as arguably the most spectacular pointed stiletto shoes for over 40 years.

Okay, so apart from the heel, my Buckle Monk shoes may be more reminiscent of a man's 1960's "winklepicker" style, rather than a woman's stiletto style of that era, but of course that's part of what I love so much about them. They're truly unique.

Now production of this heel has ceased, will these shoes become collectable - like the original 60s designs they were inspired by? Time will tell. But perhaps I should stop clambering around on rocks in them and exposing that precious soft Italian calf leather to the salty seaside air ;) I must be more sensible. I must be more sensible. I must be more sensible.

RoSa Stiletto Platforms and Snowdrops -

Desperate to get out and about in my beautiful new RoSa ultra-high (almost six-inch) ultra-thin (like NEEDLES they are!) stiletto-heeled Platform Court Shoes, I have been despondently waiting for the weather to deliver an opportunity. This week we had the blessing of a day of pure blue skies and sunshine, appearing quite unexpectedly amongst bitterly cold wintry days of icy winds, and either grey drizzling rain or wet sleety snow.

Inspired by such unseasonaI brightness, I felt the urge to go and find signs of early Spring, and I planned a park visit, where I would be able to walk sedately along the pathways, occasionally resting on a bench to bask in the mild sun. Well, we found a most delightful place, with snowdrops and crocuses galore and birdsong filling the air. But rather than the smoothly paved paths I had imagined, I found myself negotiating rugged rocks, stone steps and soft grassland. Challenging terrain for a high-heeled platform-soled shoe. But I (and my RoSa shoes) rose to the challenge and survived heroically. As you can see from these photos:

And if you watch the video (on the YouTube player at the bottom of this blog) you can listen to the sweet sounds of birdsong. Oh, and watch me teetering along on stones and grass in very high, thin heels and platforms.... ;)

Gold-Buckled Stilettos and Leather Suit Go Shopping

Well, I did promise that I would post a video of me out and about in my gorgeous RoSa High-Heel Buckle Court Shoes (a style so reminiscent of the golden era of the original stiletto - 1959-1962) and figure-hugging leather skirt suit. My weekly supermarket shop was made so much more exciting by the wearing of this outfit. I always enjoy the challenge of my long, ultra-pointy toes in everyday life and pushing a strong-willed supermarket trolley added a welcome extra dimension.

Well, I don't suppose I'll ever really get to the bottom of why my Sarah of RoSa channel was suspended. But I have now created a new channel in the name of RoSa Shoes - http://www.youtube.com/rosashoes to which I will over the next week or so add some of my existing videos, and hopefully very soon some new ones of me wearing, walking (or teetering) and generally enjoying my RoSa Shoes!

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all the many viewers and subscribers for all the wonderful comments and support over the years. I do hope that many of you will be reading this, and will continue to subscribe and enjoy our efforts to showcase our lovely shoes. I will shortly be replacing the Video Gallery on the website, on which you will be able to see featured videos from my channel.

Christmas Tree Dressing in RoSa High Stiletto Platforms

Last night I decorated my Christmas Tree. Yes - I did find one! (If you were disappointed with the lack of plot resolution in my video "Christmas in Boots" in which I ventured off on a quest to find a tree in a local market, and got straw stuck in the thin stilettos and sharp pointed toes of my RoSa boots whilst browsing, you'll be pleased to hear that I did in fact find a beautiful tree the next day - in a tile-floored garden centre.)

It's quite a tall tree, and tall trees can sometimes present difficulties when decorating. But this year I had no problems - I just slipped on a pair of the new High Platform Stilettos by RoSa and automatically gained enough height to easily reach even the highest branches.

What? Open-toes, you say? Where are the lusciously long-pointed toes that RoSa Shoes are so well-known for? Well, although points will remain our first love, we've always had a soft spot for pretty platform shoes, and I've personally been wearing them for....... years.

Unfortunately, many platform shoes are not so pretty, with rather ugly thick heels, big closed-in toes and clumpy platforms. Our seductively peep-toed platform designs, with their solid, steel-stemmed slender 15cm (almost six inch) heels are perfectly balanced on shapely 3cm platforms to give an elegant, perfectly proportioned elevation. They're much more about the heel than the sole. Whereas some platforms are designed to make a high heel feel lower, ours are designed to enable a high heel to be even higher, whilst still retaining wearability and elegance.

And thus, of course, avoiding the need for step ladders when tree decorating. Or changing light bulbs. Or fixing the roof tiles. The list is endless. Watch this space.....

A Touch of Gold on Leather

I love the Autumn; it's my favourite of all the Seasons. I adore its smoky scents, and the gathering excitement as Christmas approaches. I relish the richness and warmth of the turning colours in the plant world as they dispel the gloom of the chill in the air and the darkening days.

So, yesterday, what better way to celebrate the arrival of the latest addition to the RoSa range (the High-Heel version of our classic stiletto Buckle Court Shoe) than wearing them for a late afternoon country walk?

As the sun was sinking in a sudden golden burst, I enjoyed the last of the light and made my stilettoed, pointy-toed way along the riverside path.

Clad in my leather suit to shield my body from the crisp Autumn air, I strolled leisurely along, the tightness of my skirt preventing me from striding out in an undesirably ungainly fashion.

You will have to take my word (and photographic evidence) for this, as we lost any opportunities for filming as the sun slipped away. But never fear, it won't be too long before my gold buckles and black leather are out and about again, and next time we will aim to capture the motion, too.

The Clicking Sound of Metal Tipped Stiletto Heels

There is something deeply satisfying and, frankly, erotic about the sound of metal-tipped heels striking the ground. This may go some way to explaining the success of my recent video offerings. (It was most gratifying to find Town Walk in Thin Stiletto Heels and Tight Skirt reached the first page of YouTube Top Favourites for this month). Apart of course from the visually appealing aspect of the ultra-pointed toes and needle-thin stiletto heels of my black patent RoSa high-heel court shoes, I know that many people have enjoyed the sound of my metal-tipped stilettos clickety-clicking along.

Now, it's important to stress that RoSa shoes are not at the present time supplied with metal tips, but fitted as standard with protective plastic tips. This means that they present less of a threat to softer, indoor floorings.

Could we not offer the option of metal tips for those of you who are happy to accept the risk to floors? Well, we probably would if we could find any that fit our slender stiletto heels. Unfortunately, in trying to source a metal tip which can be fitted to our shoes we have, so far at least, drawn a blank. It appears that none exist. In order for me to make that desired tick tick sound, I took my shoes to my shoe-mender who fitted them with the larger tips that are available, and expertly ground them down to the size of our heels.

It seems that some of you, however, have not been so lucky in finding a shoe-mender who is able to offer this service. Which is why we are continuing to search for a supply of metal tips which fit our ultra-thin stiletto heels. We will of course let you all know if and when we succeed. Hopefully it will happen, and you won't have to wait too long.

If, like me, you can't draw for toffee (although I'd try very hard for a bottle of Bolly) - and even if you can, then you'll be impressed by the talents of the various artists who have been inspired to put pencil to paper by photos of me in my ultra-pointy-toed, ultra-thin stiletto-heeled RoSa Shoes. I'm completely honoured and humbled to have been the subject of drawings by top erotic cartoonist Chris of England (aka Chris Cartoons, and latterly as Chris Comix), the highly respected watercolourist David Poxon, Australian illustrator Eddy Crosby and last, but by no means least, my good friend Beth.

Yesterday I was sent the latest offering by Ed, which is a most appealing sketch inspired by the recent photos of me in my RoSa Black Patent High Stiletto Courts:

Good, isn't it? Slightly exaggerated in the upper body department, but hey! If you've got it, flaunt it! I can't help thinking that the figure-enhancing skirt may also have been partly responsible for drawing his attention. (No pun intended, honestly)..

Walking in Thin Stiletto Heels (With Video Clips)

As promised, the subject of my latest filming adventures is walking in metal-stem thin stilettos (by RoSa Shoes of course).

I went to a meeting in town the other day and got myself all smartly suited up with my RoSa Black Patent Leather High Heel Court Shoes to complement the outfit. These (as you'll know if you own a pair, or have read my last blog entry) are a mere 5mm wide - narrower than many cracks in the paving around town. I had a fair amount of walking to do and so, apart from (obviously) needing to step over the cracks to avoid certain death, I also had to adopt certain walking strategies to prevent a) damage to the heel stem, b) losing the heel tip and c) becoming wedged for ever and ever in the pavement.

The trick is to concentrate on what you're doing. Simple as that. Watch where you're going. Think about where you're putting your feet. All pretty obvious stuff really, but it seems there are a whole mass of people who clomp along in their thick plastic "stilettos" shoving their feet willy-nilly down any hole, crevice or gaping chasm around. Quite frankly, these people deserve what they get. If they want their shoes to look shoddy and scruffy that's up to them. But that's not me.

But there is another skill - I have to (subtly, almost unnoticeably) alter the length of my stride to prevent any of the above-described catastrophes. Of course, if you've noticed how close-fitting, and therefore stride-restricting, my non-stretch skirt is, you'll realise that there's a whole other set of skills to be employed here. But that's the subject of yet another blog, I reckon.

Oh, and if by chance the worst should happen (which of course it very rarely does to me, because of afore-mentioned skill deployment) you will see in the next clip my tip for instant running repairs - I always carry a bottle of nail polish of matching colour in my handbag. It's no bother to stop and do a quick "touch up". This is one reason why our RoSa stiletto heels are not leather-covered. There's nothing more heart-breaking than scuffed-up leather. (The other reason is so there's no leather to add to the thickness of the heels).

By the way, you may have noticed in the first clip that there is a lot of quite delicious sound coming from the heels. This is because I have had my expert shoe repairer fit steel tips. I must stress that RoSa Shoes do not come with these already fitted (they have protective plastic-coated tips) as there is of course the issue of damage to certain flooring. One must therefore be most careful when walking indoors. After my meeting, I decided to relax and visit the teashop and stroll around at the local museum. Apart from the tiled floor (which, incidentally, resulted in a most satisfying clickety-click sound) there was a fair amount of wood around. I did try, honestly, not to put too much weight onto my heels, so I wasn't too worried about it. And the two security guards who watched me as I entered the museum seemed quite happy for me to continue my walk....

Are All High Heels Stilettos?

The simple answer to my title question is "no". However, if a recent online search is anything to go by, most high heels available today are described as stilettos, even though they are most definitely not stilettos. Unlike those by RoSa Shoes which most definitely ARE stilettos. To illustrate, here's a photo of my leg and a RoSa High-Heel Oxford Lace-up:

Let's remember that the original Italian stiletto heels of the late 1950s were so named because of their resemblance to the stiletto dagger - a sharp, narrow-bladed instrument capable of deep penetration (ooh!). These original stiletto heels were constructed from a slender, solid metal stem bedded into a carved wooden base - a highly labour intensive manufacturing process. Most high heels today are mass-produced and are plastic-moulded with an internal metal tube for reinforcement. This construction obviously limits how thin the heel can be.

Our heels, manufactured by Italian craftsmen by combining the original techniques with modern technology, are a mere 5mm wide! Out of interest, that's about the same as the hollow metal tube inside a typical moulded plastic high heel.

Now, there are drawbacks to walking on real stiletto heels - one must of course take extra care to avoid cracks in pavements for example. I'm thinking that in my next video I could show you how I cope with this problem. "About time!" I hear you cry - yes, I know it's been a while since my last video offering. Patience, dear reader. RoSa Shoes Appear in Shoes Calendar 2010 alongside Messrs Louboutin, Blahnik et al

The "365 Days of Shoes Calendar 2010" published by Workman of New York is now widely available and I'm very pleased to tell you that two of our creations are featured in its pages and one also in the page-a-day Gallery Calendar "Shoes".

I love the idea of a new shoe every day! These wall and desktop calendars are a perfect way for us shoe-fetishists to feed our habit - with Louboutins, Manolos, Jimmy Choos peppering the pages and causing us to drool and tremble with desire. But the climax to our fantasies has to be when, on reaching the pages of February 18th (Gallery Calendar), and March 14th and April 2nd (Wall Calendar) we are treated to the ultra-pointed delights of the Classic Stiletto Heel Front and Rear Laced Boot and the High-Heel Stiletto Red Patent Court, both by RoSa Shoes.
I'm also delighted to note that the publishers have chosen to include the boot on the cover of the wall calendar. Although on their own website it seems they hadn't finalised the cover design in time for the correct version to appear, you can see the actual cover at the top of this blog. Our boot can be seen 3rd from the left, bottom. Brilliant! Go buy!

Suede and Patent Stiletto Boots

Following on from the success of the Black Leather High-Heel Knee Boots introduced into the RoSa Shoes range last Winter, I'm excited to tell you about the new Black Suede and Patent Leather combination. In fact, I'll go one better than that - I'll show it to you:(By the way, the photo enlarges if you click on it). So, for those of you who can't wait to get back into boots after the long, hot, sultry Summer (for those reading this in the UK, you'll know what I mean) - and for those of you who like your boots stilettoed, high-heeled and with long, long pointed toes (and points don't come any pointier than RoSa!) then you'll (like me) be zipping yourselves into these Black Beauties.

RoSa High Stiletto Heels Sink and Survive!

I recently wore my beautiful new Black Leather Cross-Strap RoSa Sandals, with as-near-as-damn-it five-inch heels to a friend's wedding. Despite the fact it was in a village Church, and the Reception in a garden marquee (on a farm), not once did I stop and think - "Sarah, there are likely to be uneven, poorly-made or bumpy and grassy paths and tracks, and any number of farmyard obstacles - are these shoes the best choice?"

This is either because a) I am intrepid or b) I am incredibly vain.

Either way, if you know me from my previous MySpace blog, you will know I am not one to shirk a little effort in the looking good stakes.

So I buckled myself into my shoes and off I went.

I teetered my way down the 1 in 3 gradient car park and climbed the impossibly narrow stone steps up to the Church (carefully turning my feet to prevent my incredibly long pointed toes from catching).

So far so good. After the wedding, we were invited to walk across the lush meadow that was the Churchyard for the wedding group photos. I bravely continued my high-heeled quest by keeping my weight forward and "tiptoeing" across the grass.

Admittedly, whilst waiting to be called into the photo group, I did succumb to a wee rest on a bench. Not because my feet were hurting you understand - purely to give my calves a little break from the balletic exercise they were getting.

Then came the moment when I was called to join the group for the photo. My position (behind some rather tall people) did not faze me - I was after all wearing my very high RoSa Shoes. I balanced myself perfectly to prevent myself from tipping backwards on the uneven grass.

I waited while the photographer arranged and re-arranged the group several times. It was at this point that my balance finally wavered and I felt my heels slowly sinking deep into the grass. In my panic I grabbed the arm of the unknown (and rather surprised) gentleman next to me. And then "snap". No, NOT my heels breaking (they don't -they're titanium steel!) - the camera.

So, can you see me in the photo?

No? Well, never mind. I had a wonderful time - felt fantastic in my High Heel RoSa Sandals and I wouldn't have worn anything else.
